Fishing Trip

This past January I went to the White River in Arkansas for our annual fishing trip with my Uncles and some friends. This year we kept it small and had a great time. I caught a 20 inch Brown trout and recieved my first "Lunker" pin for releasing the fish.

Cowboys can still tame Colts

Well the boys did it. They tamed the Colts and I was there to see it. We had an awsome time and enjoyed the game. My brother did take a lot of ribbing after the game for his Manning jersey, but it was well worth it. Go Cowboys!

Harvest Success

There is always something magical about the harvesting of a buck. I am not sure what it is or why it exists, but it goes back to Indian lore and the cave paintings of old. The buck deer symbolizes power, agility and wariness. To overcome the natural instincts of such an animal and successfully harvest one is one of the greatest accomplishments a hunter can obtain.

Deer Season, Cold weather, and Football

The best time of the year is upon us. The weather is changing, they days are getting shorter and Football is in full effect. The fall is a great time to get outside and enjoy what God has created. The animals seem to feel it as well.

The other great thing about fall is that it is the beginning of deer season. Sitting in a blnd watching the sun come up and seeing the woods come alive, is there anything better? I can think of a few things, but not many. Opening day of rifle season in Texas is like Christmas morning was when you were a little ankle biter. You can't sleep the night before and the anticipation is almost overwhelming. I look foward to this time of year and hopefully you do too.

Get Outside!

9 Days to Go!

There are only 9 days until dove season!! On September 1st there will be lead flying and birds dodging and weaving. For many this is the beginning of another hunting season and marks the end of a long summer of anticipation. I look foward to this time every year as a time to get out in the woods and have fun with my family and friends. This will be the first time I have hunted dove in Young County so we will see how it goes. Wish me and my friends luck! Here are some pictures to identify the two main types of doves that we are likely to see:

Dove Season

Dove season is quickly approaching and I am busying myself with creating decoy stands. I got this idea from a product that I saw at Cabela's that retailed for $79.99. I used PVC pipe, u-bolts, a steel pipe and 4 plastic dove decoys. The total price for this build was $12.98. We will try it out in a month or so!

Can anyone say Choke?

Well the Mavs had their chance and they blew it. So many missed shots and poor play from the "stars" caused the downfall of this team. Well, maybe next year.

AHHH!! The Castle!

Spent the Memorial day weekend in Illinois for a wedding. Got to see a lot of my family and friends and we had a great time. One of the highlights is getting to go to White castle at midnight and get some sliders. Nothing better than a few mouth sized hamburgers to wake up the digestive system. Too bad we don't have one around here.

Home Away From Home

Well we finally did it. We got a lease trailer that has air conditioning and running water. This is really going to help during those hot summer work days and early deer season. It is a little rough and we had quite a journey to get it to the lease, but it is there and ready to be hooked up to power and water.

The woods in the dark

Ever walk in the woods in the dark? On your way to the deer blind or dove field. Maybe you are setting up under a turkey roost to get that early morning flydown. Who knows, but do you ever get the feeling that you are being watched while you go about your trek? I sometimes get this feeling and the slightest noise scares me half to death. Well maybe we should pay more attention to our intuitions, or this could be us.

Improvements

As my knowledge of e-callers increases I am making some adjustments to my little project. Here is the one I have completed now. The sound is much better and with a VHF wireless transmitter I don't have to spread out long wires and deal with all the mess.

My new creation.

I have built a varmint caller using some tips I found on the internet, some parts from Radio Shack and my IPOD. I am going to try it out this weekend and hopefully I will have some more pictures to post!

More turkeys

Here is a picture of the second turkey we harvested this weekend. Can anyone say turkey fajitas?

Success!!!

We finally connected on a couple of birds this weekend. They are still not very responsive to calls, but we did OK. The hens must be sitting on eggs because the 20 or so birds we saw this weekend were all Toms and Jakes.

Been Awhile

It has been awhile since I posted last. I have been hunting a few times, with little luck. I am going again this weekend and look foward to scoring on a turkey and maybe a few varmints. Here is a picture of my new varmint rifle. It is a 20" BBL AR-15 with a Stag Arms Lower chambered in 5.56mm. I am using the Eotech HWS for quick target acquisition.

Turkey Hunting

Well the first weekend of turkey season is officially over. We had a great time and I hope you did as well. The turkeys were not very responsive, but we did see quite a few and Tim even managed to score on one.
